Asking for help isn’t giving up. It’s refusing to give up.
Asking for help isn’t giving up. It’s refusing to give up.
When you coach with me, I hold the belief that there is more right with you than wrong. Coaching is not about “fixing” you, it’s about you befriending yourself and returning “home.”
A little known fact…trauma fragments you and disconnects you from yourself. That’s what causes so much of your pain and the dysfunction that might be showing up in your behaviours, relationships, health and life.
You may be feeling broken, unhappy, weak or just numb.
The work we do together is to help you reconnect with parts of yourself you’ve lost so that you can:
- Understand what you’re feeling.
- Know yourself better.
- Reclaim your power.
- Return to a felt sense of wholeness.
How does it work?
When you and I coach together, I create a safe environment for you to heal and dissolve stuck emotions in your body so you can feel more peaceful, happy and free.
Unlike traditional healing approaches that address trauma through the analytical mind, Somatic Trauma Recovery Coaching taps into your body’s innate wisdom.
“Soma” is an ancient Greek word meaning the body living in its wholeness…
Therefore, somatic recovery refers to a mindful, body-centered approach to healing and wholeness. Through mindfully tracking sensations in the body, you gain access to any fears, disempowering beliefs or insecurities that stem out of the trauma.
This is our doorway in
Together, I help you observe and “ride the wave” of the emotion, memory or bodily sensation, without judgement or resistance, knowing that it will disappear. Your body gives you clarity and awareness and often brings you powerful images or messages.
Based on what’s coming up, we use your body’s wisdom to help you rewrite the narrative…essentially changing the ending to the trauma and anchoring new empowering beliefs. We do this all in a relaxed and safe space, which the body needs in order to complete and integrate the healing.
Some people worry that doing trauma work will be heavy and re-traumatizing. But it doesn’t have to be. The approach that I use is gentle, safe and healing. Here’s what my client Afrah said about that specifically:
“In three months of working with Michelle, my entire life has changed. Throughout my life, I have tried many different forms of therapy and healing. However many left me feeling re-traumatized. In three months of working with Michelle, my entire life has changed. My relationship with myself, others, with stress, trauma, anxiety, and depression. All of that shifted so rapidly that it was hard to believe at first, over the course of time with fewer flashbacks/nightmares/anxiety I’ve realized that the results are long-lasting and real. My health concerns have either vanished entirely, or I’m seeing positive changes where I used to feel there was no hope. I’ve begun feeling significantly less stressed, and I am enjoying a better quality of life than I ever imagined I could have.”
Results from working together
Healing happens in layers. Often times, the various traumas we experience are all connected, almost like a web. That’s the good news, because it means as you heal one area, you positively impact many.
Because of this connected nature, I typically see the best results when clients work with me for 4 months or longer. In fact, many choose to renew because they get results that they’ve not been able to get in other traditional approaches.
After just one session, you can expect to feel lighter, calmer and inspired. You now have an effective strategy to bring you back to that peaceful state, no matter what’s happening in your day, but especially when you’re faced with a situation that may trigger you.
Valuable tools for life
One of the most valuable take-aways my clients tell me is how much they appreciate the tools I give them. You will leave each session more mindful and knowing better how to regulate your emotions throughout your day. This allows you to stay calm in stressful situations, be more intentional and live in integrity.
Long Term Benefits
Long-term, your emotional health and well-being will improve. You will notice you are:
- Less reactive.
- More in control over thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
- Less critical of yourself.
- More confident.
- Able to forgive and let go.
- More accepting of yourself and others (which improves relationships).
My clients tell me they end up with a sense of peace, happiness and lightness that they haven’t felt in forever.
Through this work, you too can feel more joyful and alive than you have in years! Then you can make more empowered decisions on a daily basis that you fee good about. Ultimately, this is how you create the life you want and deserve.
“I’m walking…no, soaring out of our time together with a weightlessness, a feeling of playfulness, and an absolute strength that I’ve never felt before. I started my coaching with Michelle feeling like I was being crushed and crumpled by certain things in my life. While working with Michelle, I was able to eliminate multiple deep rooted self defeating habits, fears, self doubt, and non-serving behaviours. I gained a greater self awareness than I thought I could ever have. I remembered natural talents that I had completely forgotten or suppressed. I recollected pieces of myself I had lost for too long. And, I came to a realization that something I thought was a negative part of my existence, consistently, was actually one of the biggest positives of my life, and a talent that I can embrace and use to move forward with confidence. I think I’ve laughed more in the last 2 months than I have in 2 years.”
Ready to experience awareness, confidence and joy, too?
Mindfulness & Coaching
You may have heard all the recent rave about mindfulness – especially as more people are dealing with higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression, sleep challenges and more. Mindfulness can absolutely help with these. And it’s been around for centuries.
What is Mindfulness?
“Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present-moment, non-judgmentally” (Jon Kabat-Zinn).
In other words, mindfulness is being completely and intentionally focused on “the now,” rather than caught up in the past or swept away by the future.
The quickest and most effective way for you to become mindful is through the body. By becoming aware of your breath and bodily sensations, you gain access to a world of wisdom inside of you. This helps you cultivate patience, non-judgement, acceptance, loving-kindness, compassion and gratitude. It also helps you choose your response to any situation, versus reacting. The more you can consciously choose your response, the more you can create a life that feels empowered, light and joyful.
Mindfulness has been scientifically proven to:
- Reduce stress.
- Improve mood.
- Increase concentration.
- Enhance mental health.
- Support overall physical health.
Mindfulness also rewires your brain. Here’s how:
- It’s been discovered to shrink the amygdala – the part of the brain that triggers you to go into “fight, flight, freeze” and become impulsive rather than intentional.
- It activates the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for rational thinking, decision making and self-regulation…meaning you can stay calm and make better choices.
- It thickens the hippocampus, which controls memory and learning. This supports your concentration, focus and memory.
Given these amazing benefits, that’s why my approach to coaching is through mindfulness and the body.
Trauma & the body
Because trauma is stored in the body – through your senses, synapses and cells – it’s an extremely powerful and effective tool for accessing, processing and resolving trauma. In addition to this, the body contains a wealth of wisdom and knows exactly what it needs to heal. The challenge is learning how to silence the mind, so you can hear and respond to the body’s natural healing urges, impulses and rhythms. To learn more about how this all works, check out my Trauma page here.
My unique approach to Coaching
When you coach with me, I bring together many modalities to best support your trauma recovery. I include powerful mindfulness techniques, somatic healing methods, life coaching as well as spiritual wisdom.
Mindfulness and somatic healing both stem from Buddhism. Therefore, through our coaching, you’re embodying the Buddhist teachings to help build greater connection to your inner Self. You don’t even have to be a Buddhist to benefit from this wisdom. As the Dalai Lama says, “Don’t use Buddhism to become a Buddhist. Use Buddhism to become better at whatever else in your life you’re already doing.”
Specific Issues I Can Help You With:
- Recovering from recent or past trauma.
- Navigating major life transitions (e.g. illness, career change, divorce, etc).
- Healing from grief and loss.
- Overcoming depression, anxiety or panic attacks.
- Navigating relationship challenges.
- Breaking free from addictive patterns.
- Healing self-love and body image issues.
Michelle promised that we were going to move mountains together.
And have we ever!
“When I began working with Michelle, I was in the midst of another depressive episode. This was no longer just about a chemical imbalance in my brain. I had all the supports I needed to feel better but nothing was working. After my very first session with Michelle, I began to sleep better. After the second one, I found I had more energy. I overcame many hardships while working with Michelle, including an emotional and painful break-up. We have worked through so much including my childhood, my anxiety, my addictions, and Michelle has been right there with me every step of the way. She brings so much loving kindness and compassion to all our sessions. I have begun to find myself and answer questions like: Who am I? What are my values? What brings me joy and what doesn’t? I am getting to know myself, and better yet, I’m learning to love myself.”
